Massage Therapy is an Important Healthcare Career

School of banners-MassageIf you are looking for a healthcare career, explore the Massage Therapy program at IBMC College!

In the past, a professional massage might have been considered a luxury. Today, massage therapy has been integrated into the treatment options prescribed by mainstream medical professionals. Many massage therapists still work in luxury spas or for the hospitality industry, but others work with doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists.

Highly trained massage therapists may work to improve both physical and mental health. Massage treatments help relieve chronic pain, take away the hurt from various injuries, assist people to perform better in sports, or simply improve a client’s mood. Either way, massage therapy has become a hot profession, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the demand for trained professionals is expected to grow by 30,000 in the course of a decade.

How to Become a Professional Massage Therapist

IBMC-Massage-ClinicAt our healthcare college in Cheyenne, IBMC College, we produce fully trained therapists in 15 to 19 months, when following the prescribed coursework. At campuses in Fort Collins, Longmont and Cheyenne, students can earn their Massage Therapy Diploma in as little as 15 months. In the massage program, students learn therapeutic treatments as well as techniques to encourage relaxation, so they will have the opportunity to enjoy employment in a variety of different settings.

While many students work in healthcare, others choose to establish themselves in spas, cruise ships, hotels, and a variety of other exciting settings. Also, almost half of currently working massage therapists are self-employed professionals, and they may either work out of their own clinic or travel around and visit clients at their own homes and offices. Program graduates can choose to work regular business hours or may enjoy flexible hours and a part-time work schedule.

Typical massage professionals don’t mind a physically demanding job, and they enjoy helping people.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. IBMC College joined in on the national fight, on a local level, to combat the disease and raise awareness by holding fundraising activities and outreaches at nearby campuses in Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, Colorado Springs and Cheyenne, Wyoming. To date, $618 has been raised for the Susan B. Komen Foundation through IBMC’s efforts these last 31 days.

Students from the Fort Collins campus representing their pink in their Kinesiology class.

Students from the Fort Collins campus representing their pink in their Kinesiology class.

These are the fundraising and activities that took place in the month of October campus-wide:

  1. Students, staff and faculty were encouraged to wear jeans each Wednesday for a $1.00 donation. Additionally, individuals came together by wearing pink to support the cause.
  2. IBMC held a Pink Selfie Competition throughout the month, as well. Students gleaned pink ribbons and were asked to take a selfie, tag themselves and bring awareness to cancer through a variety of social media channels.
  3. The cosmetology and massage students offered specials in the campus clinics, including providing discounted massage services and pink gel manicures for $6.

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer.

To date, the Foundation has invested more than $2.6 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Their efforts helped reduce death rates from breast cancer by 37 percent from 1990-2013, according to the website.

Three IBMC College cosmetology students from the Fort Collins campus volunteered their time and services Saturday, Nov. 19, for Denver’s Fall Feast, a free community event that helps disadvantaged families and the homeless by feeding them, giving free haircuts, backpacks and clothing items, as well as featuring a Kids Zone, where kids can come and play in a safe environment.

The IBMC cosmetology students provided free hair-cutting services to at-risk families and the homeless during the event, held at the National Western Complex, located at 4655 Humboldt Street in Denver. With the rest of the volunteers, the IBMC students cut more than 125 heads of hair during the event, which served an estimated 1,000 people.

IBMC cosmetology instructor Ashley Wollert supervised the students and provided guidance and instruction. By the end of the day, the students were confident in their ability to cut hair properly.

The Denver Fall Feast was born out of the Cincinnati, Ohio Fall Feast – an event that is now celebrating nearly a decade of providing tens of thousands of Thanksgiving meals, healthcare screenings, warm winter items and youth activities to homeless and underserved people throughout the city. Visit fallfeast.org for more information.

Community members are invited to give back and get a jump start on their New Year’s resolutions. Starting today, IBMC College campuses across Colorado and Wyoming will waive their college registration fees* for any individual who donates a new, unwrapped toy to its Santa’s Workshop or makes a minimum $5 donation through December 12 – all just in time to start accelerated career training classes in the months of December or January!

For upcoming 2017 high school graduates, with any toy or monetary donation, registration fees will be waived for any class start during the next year!

*IBMC College is waiving the registration fee for the donation to a worthy cause and not for enrolling.

IBMC College is helping its less-fortunate students this holiday season by stocking their Santa’s Workshop at each campus location with toys donated by community members, incoming students, staff and faculty. This outreach is a great way to spread cheer in the IBMC family by giving back during the holidays and allowing local students to shop for gifts for their families.

“Caring Individuals … Changing Lives” isn’t just the College’s vision statement, it’s a way of life. That’s why IBMC College’s five campuses will participate in the event. Any toys that are not picked by IBMC College students, following IBMC’s Santa’s Workshop event, will be donated to a local toy drive or charity in Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, Colorado Springs, CO and Cheyenne, WY.

If you would like to partake in the event, you can donate any new, unwrapped toy for children ages newborn to 14 years old to the campus(es) listed below. Minimum $5 donations are also accepted. Please make checks payable to IBMC College with Santa’s Workshop noted in the memo line.
