Seven IBMC College Fort Collins cosmetology student volunteers lent a helping hand – and a pair of scissors – to homeless men and women during a community outreach on Jan. 27.IBMC College at Murphy Center 1

The students and their instructor, Robin Morgan, traveled to The Sister Mary Alice Murphy Center, located at 242 Conifer St. in Fort Collins, where they gave each participating client of the Center a haircut, as well as a lending ear.

“The experience for them was beyond what (the students) ever expected,” Fort Collins Cosmetology instructor Robin Morgan stated in an email about the outreach. “They came back to the school more humbled and appreciative of what they have in life.”

According to The Center’s website, 17 independent agencies operate programs out of the Murphy Center — providing everything from core human needs, crisis intervention, as well as stabilization and self-sustainability services — with a collaborative mission to help our guests escape homelessness or prevent them from becoming homeless. For more information about the Murphy Center, visit their website at murphycenter.org.IBMC College at Murphy Center 3

Cosmetology students from the IBMC College Greeley campus volunteered in November 2016 at one of the Murphy Center’s partner agencies, Catholic Charities, providing free haircuts to at-risk veterans in the Fort Collins community.

“(I am) humbled and proud of the class,” Morgan said. “We are definitely ready to volunteer our time for the community more often.”

Leon became a household name after starring in “The Kindness Diaries” — a Netflix original series that follows Leon on his trip from Los Angeles, California, to across the sea, traveling, eating and sleeping purely by the generosity and hospitality of strangers.

After working for several years as a broker in London, Leon Logothetis began to feel uninspired and chronically depressed. He gave it all up for a life on the road, citing the inspiration for this life-altering change to the movie, “The Motorcycle Diaries.”

Since then, Leon has visited more than 90 countries, and has traveled to every continent. He is the host of the TV series, “Amazing Adventures of a Nobody,” which follows Leon across America, the United Kingdom and Europe on 5 dollars, 5 pounds and 5 euros a day, respectively. He recently returned from filming his new TV show, “The Kindness Diaries,” in which he circumnavigated the globe on his vintage yellow motorbike, Kindness One, giving life-changing gifts along the way to unsuspecting good Samaritans. All of this while relying on the kindness of strangers.

Leon is the author of three inspirational books, “Amazing Adventures of a Nobody,” “The Kindness Diaries” and his newest book, “Live, Love, Explore: Discover the Way of the Traveler A Roadmap to the Life You Were Meant to Live.”

Making good money can be painfully difficult without an education beyond high school. Still, the cost of higher education can make some feel like it’s impossible to get the education needed to move forward. The good news is that you don’t need to spend four years sitting in a classroom to start a great career. Accelerated education in the growing healthcare field is a great path to a stable career.

Why is the healthcare field growing so quickly?

The current medical workforce is rapidly approaching retirement age, meaning jobs in the field are opening every day. What’s more, as the baby boomer generation ages and the elderly population grows, we’ll need more healthcare professionals to care for them. Healthcare occupations are expected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, and many only require on-the-job training, a post-secondary certificate or an associate’s degree.

6 Common Beauty Myths you probably fell for

$
0
0

There’s a lot of beauty misinformation littering social media these days that’s giving women some wild ideas about their hair and skin. It can be difficult to tell what’s true and what’s false, so we asked professional cosmetologists: What are the most common myths people tend to fall for?

1. Cutting your hair will make it grow faster and thicker

Hairdresser Cutting Hair

While this one has probably done more good than harm, it just isn’t true. Trimming regularly can help to reduce breakage and flyaways, which will make hair look thicker and shinier. By getting rid of those split ends and hair damage, your hair will look like it’s growing faster. But, the truth is that hair will grow at a regular pace that depends on genetics, hormones and the food you eat.

2. Waxing makes hair grow back thinner

Cosmo-0617-4

Wouldn’t that be nice? Here’s the deal: When you rip off that strip, the whole hair is coming out, root and all. That means when hair starts to grow back, the follicle needs to make a brand new hair. When the little guy reaches the surface, it will look like a thinner hair because it’s really just the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the hair below will grow out the same width as the original.

3. You should never pluck above the brow

Cosmo-0617-3

Obvious warning of the day: Never overdo tweezing, or you’ll end up looking really surprised. Experts say most of the shaping should come from underneath to lift the brow up, but cleaning up the top is necessary to get rid of the occasional stray hair. Still, only pluck the really wandering ones or you could end up with some angry looking brows.

4. All your skincare needs to be from the same line

Cosmo-0617-2

It’s okay to mix things up! As much as every company would love for you to believe their line of products is superior in every way, some brands are good for some products and bad for others. Active ingredients are the only thing you need to worry about when using multiple brands. Because brands are only tested alone, you never know how products with active ingredients will interact with one another. For that reason, only use one of those at a time. Hint: They’re required to tell you if there’s an active ingredient on the back of the bottle.

5. Facial exercises keep skin smooth and taut

Cosmo-0617-5

This one could not be further from the truth! Skin is elastic, and very different from muscle tissue, which can be strengthened and toned. In fact, excessive muscle activity in the face is what can lead to laugh lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. But don’t worry, it’s okay to smile. Staying hydrated, moisturizing and using sun protection are the easiest ways to avoid wrinkles.

6. Brows should always match your hair

Cosmo-0617

While bleach-blonde brows and jet-black hair are generally not a recommended together, you do have some wiggle room when it comes to the color of your hair and brows: Just make sure they’re within a few shades of one another. Some experts agree that if your hair is dark, your brows should be two shades lighter and vice versa. Others say that what looks good can vary from person to person. As with all beauty guidelines, use your best judgement. And you can always hit the salon if you’re unsure!

Medical Assisting: Do you have the 7 traits?

$

MA-window-behind-400x250Let’s face it, a medical career is not for everyone. But if you’re reading this now, you probably already know that you love helping people, have an interest in healthcare and you’re ready for a stable and secure career. Most medical assistants work in hospitals or physicians’ offices to help examine patients, take vital signs and record medical records. Do you have the traits of a great medical assistant?

1. Good Communicator

Medical assistants interact with doctors, nurses and patients every day. It’s important that they communicate effectively so that patient concerns and questions are addressed while important medical information is obtained.

2. Compassionate

When patients enter a clinic or hospital, it’s because they’re experiencing a medical concern. They may be afraid or in pain. As a medical assistant, your job is to help them feel calm and respected as they receive care.

3. Team Player

Medical assistants work as part of an expansive team that includes doctors, nurses, medical billing and coding specialists, lab technicians and more. You’ll need to be able to work cooperatively with a variety of people, including patients and their families.

4. Honesty and Integrity

Not only will you be responsible for the confidentiality of personal medical records, but you’ll also attain information about patients’ personal lives. It’s important that you have discretion with sensitive information.

5. Positive Attitude

As with any career, there will be some days that are rougher than others. A good medical assistant takes daily struggles in stride and keeps a smile on their face. Positivity is helpful for both patients and staff to feel comfortable and appreciated.

6. Attention to Detail

Mistakes in the medical field can be costly not only in time and money, but they can be harmful to patients. Procedures like drawing blood require that medical assistants follow strict protocol for safety. Accuracy with billing, scheduling and patient history is also key in hospital and clinic settings.

7. Calm under pressure

Daily life in a doctor’s office or clinic can be chaotic. There’s always something to do, whether it’s caring for patients, scheduling appointments or updating medical records. A level head under stress can mark you as a highly valuable medical assistant.

IBMC College Fort Collins cosmetology students volunteer by performing haircuts at the 2017 SERVE Day on July 15.

IMG_0754IBMC College Fort Collins cosmetology student volunteers lent a helping hand – and a pair of scissors – to the city’s residents in need during the annual SERVE Day.

The one-day event – held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on July 15 at more than 30 churches throughout the northern Colorado corridor including Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley – provides numerous family activities including health and wellness services, bounce houses, music and a teen shopping spree.

Several cosmetology students, under the supervision of instructor Chelsea Dahlstrom from IBMC College’s Fort Collins campus, provided haircuts to attendees at the Christ Center Community Church, located at 2700 S. Lemay Ave. in Fort Collins. Ten student volunteers provided 62 free haircuts to Fort Collins residents during the event for no cost.

“A big thank you to IBMC (students) for the wonderful donation of time and talent!”

Amy Bellefeuille, Community Engagement Coordinator for SERVE 6.8

I know that everyone was impacted by the day.”

SERVE Day is a joint effort between SERVE 6.8 and local partner churches, reaching a mission of “going outside building walls to serve their community on one day.” For more information about SERVE Day, visit their website, serve68.org/serveday.
